Alanya is an ancient city that has hosted many civilizations over the centuries, where history and nature intertwine. Surrounded by the grandeur of the Taurus Mountains to the north and the rich blue of the Mediterranean to the south, this geography has stood out throughout history for its strategic importance. In antiquity, it was sometimes considered part of Pamphylia and sometimes part of Cilicia due to its location at the crossing point between Pamphylia and Cilicia.
The deep-rooted history of Alanya is evidenced not only by written sources but also by the traces beneath its lands. The skeletal remains found between the villages of Bademağacı and Oba, located northeast of the district center, reveal that the settlement in the area dates back to the Upper Paleolithic Age (20,000 - 17,000 BC).
🏺 From Ancient Times to Byzantium
The oldest known name of Alanya is Korakesion (Korakesium), which means "crow's nest." According to the accounts of the historian Herodotus, after the Trojan War (1200 BC), some of the tribes that dispersed settled in this region and lived intertwined with the local people. The Hittites, when they arrived in these lands in the 16th century BC, massacred about 600 people and took control of the region. Although all of Cilicia was invaded by Great Antiochus between 224-188 BC, thanks to the strong defense of Korakesion, this city managed to remain independent.
During the Byzantine period, the city was referred to as Kalanoros, and in the 6th-7th centuries AD, fortresses and religious structures were built for defense against increasing Arab incursions. Today, many castles and churches in and around Alanya bear traces from those times.
🏰 Seljuk Period – The Golden Age of Alaiye
The fate of Alanya changed when the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan I. Alaaddin Keykubad conquered the city in 1221. The Sultan, who defeated the local ruler Kyr Vart, married his daughter and incorporated the city into the Seljuk lands under the name "Alaiye". Alaiye experienced its golden age during the Keykubad period; architectural structures such as city walls, a shipyard, the Red Tower, and a palace were built during this time.
Keykubad used Alaiye not only as a port city but also as a winter capital, making it the second administrative center of the Anatolian Seljuk State.
⚔️ The Beyliks and Mamluks Period
With the weakening of the Seljuk State, Alaiye came under the control of the Karamanoğulları Beyliği in the 1300s. In 1427, the Karamanoğulları transferred this strategic city to the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt for 5,000 gold.
🕌 Ottoman Rule and the Name Alanya
In 1471, Gedik Ahmet Pasha, one of the commanders of Ottoman Sultan Fatih Sultan Mehmet, incorporated Alaiye into Ottoman lands. Thus, a period of stability began in the city, and it continued to develop as a coastal province of the Ottoman Empire.
In 1571, Alaiye became part of the Cyprus Province, in 1864 of the Konya Province, in 1868 of the Antalya Sanjak, and in 1871 it officially became a district of Antalya.
The region's adventure of acquiring the name "Alanya" took place in 1935. During a visit by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a typographical error made on the map drew attention, and this led to the modernization of the name "Alaiye" to its current form, Alanya.
